Lilac Sunbonnet

24x36"

Oil on linen

Lilac Sunbonnet (Langloisia setosissima) is a native wildflower in the southwestern United States. I found these specific ones near Panamint Springs which is the western edge of Death Valley. These were on my bucket list to find and I stumbled upon them pretty randomly. There were literally thousands of them and they covered the desert floor. They were growing right out of the sand. Lilac Sunbonnets are also incredibly small. They are about 2cm wide or smaller. Creating this rather large painting allowed for its details to be shown. It has bold markings that help guide pollinators and almost seemed like there were arrows with the yellow angled spots. These flowers allowed me to take a second and appreciate the small wonders around us. They wouldn't have been noticed unless I took a good look at where I was stepping.
